Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) for international students
This guide is general information, not legal advice. Rules and fees change — confirm anything important with the official source linked below and your university's international office.
Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is Lithuania's largest and best-known technical university, based in Kaunas. It is strongest in engineering, IT/informatics, business and economics, and the natural sciences, and runs a wide range of English-taught bachelor's and master's degrees. This guide covers what KTU offers international students, what it costs, and how to apply — with the official pages to confirm every figure.
Always confirm fees, deadlines and language on the official page
Tuition and deadlines change with every intake, and not every programme is taught in English. The numbers below are guides for recent intakes only. Before you rely on anything, check the specific programme page and the official KTU bachelor's and master's admissions pages.
What KTU is, in one paragraph
KTU describes itself as "one of Lithuania's leading universities, recognised for its innovation, strong research performance, innovative study programmes, and close collaboration with industry" (en.ktu.edu). It is organised into roughly nine faculties spanning informatics, mechanical engineering and design, electrical and electronics engineering, chemical technology, civil engineering and architecture, mathematics and natural sciences, social sciences/arts/humanities, and the School of Economics and Business. For international students, the practical takeaway is that KTU is a technical university first — its deepest English-taught provision is in engineering, IT and applied sciences, with a solid business and economics offering alongside.
Fields and programmes
KTU advertises dozens of English-taught programmes across bachelor's and master's levels. Officially marketed examples of strengths include:
- Informatics and IT — KTU's Faculty of Informatics is one of the largest in Lithuania, and its Informatics Engineering programme has held the "Euro-Inf" international quality label.
- Engineering — mechanical, electrical and electronics, civil, chemical and related fields.
- Business and economics — through the School of Economics and Business.
- Natural and physical sciences, mathematics, and architecture.
Check the exact programme, not the field
"KTU does engineering in English" is not the same as "this specific programme is in English this year." Programme lists and the language of instruction change. Browse and verify each one in the official course finder at apply.ktu.edu and on its individual programme page.
Tuition fees
Fees depend on the field and the study level, and they are set per intake by the university. As a guide, KTU's published 2026/27 bachelor's fees were grouped roughly like this:
| Field group (bachelor's) | Approx. annual fee, 2026/27 intake |
|---|---|
| Business, economics, communication, linguistics, political science | from ~€3,250 |
| Engineering, technology, informatics, physical/maths sciences, education | from ~€4,201 |
| Architecture (integrated) | from ~€5,676 |
Master's fees were higher (for example, broadly in the ~€4,700–€7,100 range depending on field for recent intakes). These figures are indicative for the stated intake only.
Do not treat these fees as current or final
KTU's tuition is approved per intake and announced on its own admissions pages. Always confirm the exact, current figure for your programme and intake on the official bachelor's or master's page before budgeting or paying anything.
On top of tuition, budget for living costs in Kaunas. A realistic monthly figure is €350–€700unverified, and Kaunas is generally cheaper than Vilnius, with university dormitories the lowest-cost housing option.
Tuition-free places and scholarships
There are two distinct routes to paying less — or nothing — and they are not the same:
- State-funded (tuition-free) places. EU/EEA citizens, holders of a permanent residence permit, and people of Lithuanian origin may compete for state-funded study places through Lithuania's national admissions system (LAMA BPO), usually alongside an application via KTU's own platform. These places are competitive and allocated by the state, not simply granted.
- KTU tuition-fee waivers. KTU offers partial or full tuition-fee waivers for applicants with outstanding results, and these are open to international applicants. There are also Lithuanian state scholarships for nationals of certain countries, with their own separate deadlines.
Apply early and tick the scholarship box
Scholarship and state-funded-place rules, amounts and deadlines change every intake — and some (like state scholarships for specific countries) close earlier than the general deadline. Apply through apply.ktu.edu early so KTU can run an eligibility check, and confirm current options with the International Studies Office at [email protected].
Entry requirements
Requirements differ by programme and level, so use these as a rough orientation and confirm on the programme page:
- Bachelor's — completed secondary education meeting KTU's minimum grade thresholds, plus the required subject background for the programme.
- Master's — a relevant bachelor's degree meeting a minimum grade average, plus (often) a motivation assessment.
- English language — for the 2026/27 intake KTU's guidance indicated around IELTS 5.5 for bachelor's and IELTS 6 / TOEFL iBT 85 / CEFR C1 for master's, with per-component minimums. Some applicants may use other recognised proof of English. Exact thresholds vary by programme and change.
Confirm the English requirement before booking a test
Language thresholds and accepted certificates are set per programme and updated each intake. Check the specific programme's stated language of instruction and English requirement on the official KTU page before you pay for an IELTS/TOEFL test or assume a Medium-of-Instruction letter will be accepted.
Deadlines and how to apply
KTU runs admissions for bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies through a competitive process, with applications made online via its DreamApply platform.
- Apply at: apply.ktu.edu — choose a programme, create an application, and upload your documents.
- Timeline: for the 2026/27 intake, KTU advertised an application window roughly from 15 October 2025 with a deadline around 1 June 2026 and studies starting in September 2026. EU/EEA candidates seeking state-funded places also apply via LAMA BPO, which opens later.
Two systems for EU/EEA state-funded places
If you are an EU/EEA citizen aiming for a tuition-free place, you will typically apply both through KTU's own platform and through the national LAMA BPO system, which has its own (often summer) timeline. Start with apply.ktu.edu so KTU can confirm your eligibility, and ask the International Studies Office how the two systems line up for your intake.
Exact dates change every year — confirm the current application window on the official bachelor's and master's admissions pages.
Visas, residence and health cover (non-EU students)
If you are a non-EU student, getting into KTU is only part of the process — you will also need a national (D) visa and/or a temporary residence permit (TRP), proof of funds and health insurance. These are government requirements, not university ones, and they change.
- Proof of funds: you must show you can support yourself. As a benchmark, students are generally expected to evidence around ≈ €8,071unverified for the year.
- Health insurance: non-EU students are not in the state system by default and must hold private cover for their permit. EU/EEA/Swiss students normally use a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) instead.
Immigration rules are set by the state, not the university
Visa and residence-permit conditions, proof-of-funds amounts and insurance minimums are decided by the Lithuanian Migration Department and change over time. Confirm the current requirements on migracija.lrv.lt and with KTU's International Studies Office before you make travel or financial commitments.
Recognition and working after your degree
A KTU degree is part of the European Higher Education Area, so it follows the Bologna structure and is recognised across the EU. For academic recognition of a Lithuanian qualification, the national authority is SKVC.
A recognised degree is not the same as a licence to practise
EU recognition means your KTU qualification is accepted academically across the Union. It does not automatically grant the right to practise a regulated profession elsewhere. Regulated fields — including some engineering titles (chartered/licensed engineer), and professions like medicine, dentistry and law — generally require the destination country's own registration or licensing. If you plan to work in a regulated profession abroad, check that country's requirements before you enrol.
After graduating, EU students can stay and work freely; non-EU graduates can usually apply for a temporary residence permit to look for work for a limited period — but the rules and time limits change, so confirm them on migracija.lrv.lt.

KTU's guidance for the 2026/27 intake listed roughly IELTS 5.5 (bachelor's) or IELTS 6 / TOEFL iBT 85 / CEFR C1 (master's). Requirements differ by programme and change — check the exact programme page and confirm before you book a test.
Will a KTU degree let me work as an engineer abroad?+
A KTU degree is EU-recognised, which makes academic recognition straightforward across the EU. But practising a regulated profession (e.g. a chartered/licensed engineer, or any regulated field) in another country can still require that country's own registration. Check the rules where you intend to work.
