Things to do in Vilnius on a weekend

You can fill a Vilnius weekend without spending much: free tours, walkable viewpoints, lively markets and a castle day trip are all close by. Bring an ISIC card to unlock student prices on transport, museums and cinemas.

Start with a free walking tour

The easiest way to get your bearings is a tip-based ("free") walking tour. Several operators run daily routes covering the Old Town, Užupis and the city's lesser-known corners, typically leaving from near the Town Hall (Didžioji g. 31). You can usually just show up, but it's worth booking ahead in summer.

  • Tours run roughly 2-2.5 hours.
  • You pay what you think it was worth at the end — €5-15 is normal.
  • Guides are a great source of student tips: cheap eats, gig nights, swimming spots.

Just walk it

Vilnius is compact. The Old Town, Užupis and the main parks are all 20-30 minutes apart on foot, so you rarely need transport at the weekend.

Free views and green spaces

  • Gediminas Castle Tower — climb the hill (or take the funicular) for the classic city panorama. The hill itself is free.
  • Three Crosses Hill — a short uphill walk through Kalnai Park for the best sunset view over the Old Town.
  • Užupis — the self-declared "republic" of artists across the river, with quirky street art, galleries and its tongue-in-cheek constitution posted on a wall.
  • Bernardine Garden — riverside park beside the Cathedral; open-air events and small festivals in summer.

Markets and street food

  • Hales Market (Halės turgus) — a covered market from 1906 mixing traditional stalls with modern cafés and street food. Good for a cheap, varied lunch.
  • Open-air and night markets appear around the centre at weekends, especially in warmer months. Check the city events calendar for what's on.

Museums, cinema and culture

Most museums and galleries offer reduced student tickets — always ask and show your card before paying. Cinemas such as Multikino do discounted student showings (cheaper on weekday afternoons).

Free museum days

State museums run by the Ministry of Culture are often free to enter on the last Sunday of the month. Days and venues change, so confirm on the museum's own page before you go.

Nightlife on a budget

Vilnius punches above its weight for a small capital, and a lot of it is student-priced.

  • Vilniaus and Islandijos streets form the main bar-and-club cluster ("nightlife triangle").
  • Šnekutis is a long-standing spot for cheap Lithuanian beer and food.
  • Loftas and similar venues host gigs, club nights and cultural events.

A cheap day trip: Trakai

If you want to leave the city for a few hours, Trakai — a lakeside town with a fairy-tale island castle about 28 km away — is the go-to.

HowTimeCost (one way, approx.)Notes
Bus~40 min€2-3Frequent; stops closer to the castle
Train~35 min~€2.40Fewer departures; ~3 km walk to the castle

Prices and timetables change, so check the operator before you travel. Budget half a day; students often get a small discount on local tickets in Trakai.

Getting around at the weekend

For anything beyond walking distance, the JUDU network covers buses and trolleybuses. As an international student you'll generally need an ISIC card to claim the student fare (an 80% discount on JUDU single and period tickets, per JUDU). Foreign university certificates and EURO26 cards aren't accepted for this discount. Buy tickets via the m.Ticket app, a Vilniečio card, or contactless tap on board.

Plan the weekend

Combine a Saturday free tour with a sunset at Three Crosses, a Halės Market lunch on Sunday, then a relaxed afternoon in Užupis — all walkable, almost all free.
